The Serengeti offers some of the best Safaris, it has many wonders as well
This stunning and varied national park is not only huge, it is also very beautiful. It can be found in the north west of Tanzania and encroaches into the south east of Kenya. This location is host to many wonders for us to marvel at. Let’s take a look at some of the both the unknown and more famous points of Tanzania’s wonderland.
The word Serengeti is actually derived from the Maasai language meaning “endless plains”. The Maasai were a very strong and respected people that populated the Serengeti and when Europeans first visited these lands, they left the animals alone in the Serengeti to avoid aggravating the local people. The well named Serengeti is well suited to its literal meaning, because it spans an area of around thirty thousand kilometres squared.
The main event that the Serengeti is famous for is the Circular Migration. Called many other things, this Migration occurs every year from late July through to early October. Going in search of the rains that travel up through the Serengeti, 2 million herbivores will cross through the Mara River. They continue up into the Masai Mara reserve, a popular destination for Kenya holidays and safaris.
The Serengeti also has its very own active volcano called Ol Doinyo Lengai. Becuase this volcano is still active, it has lava flows and ejects ash as well, this in turn damages plants and even prevents plant growth. Tanzania is also famous for its 550 or so Avifauna, or its bird species.
If you are interested in going on a safari, this is one of the places that should be at the top of your list. If you can try and time your safari to be between July and October you will arrive right in the middle of the Circular Migration.
So why don’t you leave home and embark on an adventure on Tanzania holidays or Zambia holidays, you won’t be at all disappointed.
pruning Hibiscus in Texas?
So, the recent 1 night of snow in Texas blackened my beautiful huge Hibiscus bush so that now it looks like a lot of black sticks and dead leaves...should I prune yet or wait till Spring?
The following site gives some great tips on hibiscus care:
http://www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com/care/index.htm
Tropical hibiscus are not deciduous in the right environment and can bloom all year long. They do not like cold temperatures as explained on the site. Even temps down into the 50's (over a prolonged time) will cause them to stop blooming, although such temps won't kill them.
But even a few days/nights of freezing or below freezing temps can severely harm them and even kill them (similar to bougainvillea). I live in northeast Texas (Texarkana) and lately we've had several cold nights getting down into the 20's (even 19 degrees one night) and my hibiscus are now dead or very close to it. I usually bring them indoors (they're all in pots) and they stay green and bloom all winter.
Anyway, it sounds like your hibiscus is an older, more established plant than any of mine so I'd be very surprised if one night of snow and cold killed it or even seriously damaged it. Unfortunately it might look hideous for a while. =(
My advice would be to go ahead and prune it back a bit (but not drastically) and if your temps are moderate enough then it should start putting on new leaves rather quickly. If you are hesitant to prune it or are unsure how far back to cut it then give it a week or so and take a small knife or even your thumb nail and scratch into the bark towards the top of the some of the branches. If the inside is still green then it's still alive at least up to that point. If it's brown on the inside then it's been frozen back to at least that point. From there just work you're way down until you see green beneath the bark & then trim it a few inches or so below that.
And don't worry. Pruning it back a bit (even a lot) won't hurt or kill it. If anything it'll leaf back out and be even fuller than what it was before! =)
