The Credit Card Machine: A Look At Consumerism
What is the one most useful thing in your wallet or purse? In truth, the most used and abused thing inside your purse or wallet is your credit card even if other people say otherwise. It is undeniable that that piece of plastic that you have multiple copies of has changed the way that we purchase stuff. With the onset of easy access to credit and its widespread popularity, we went from cash that had no security feature whatsoever to making purchases electronically. And with the advent of the internet, the whole purchasing via electronic signals habit has become much easier to do. The credit card machine that accepts your payments has really shaped the economy as we know it, having put the power of consumerism in all of our hands. But do we really know what consumerism is?
Very few people know what it really is even if a lot of things has been said about consumerism and how it has made both positive and negative changes to our economy. A few say that it is a new socio-economic mindset where people buy things that they do not need at alarming rates while some postulate that it is actually the transference of power from big industry to the consumers. The idea of power shifting is based on the fact that industry is fueled by our needs and wants, as it has always been, but now that we have so many options and that there really is no true exclusivity when it comes to new products, producers are forced even more to impress consumers with add ons, innovations, better services, et al. The point is that because we choose what to buy, the quality of products escalates. That because we can so easily purchase products, we have fallen into the habit of impulse buying or excessive purchases is the other side of the coin. Almost every store, even mom and pop establishments have a credit card reader ready to take your favored shiny plastic card and that makes it easy for us to purchase things. The economy is becoming more and more consumer driven because of that.
But it hasn't always been that way. When monopolies still truly existed, the power in day to day transactions were in the hands of the producers because we had to idly wait for them to come out with products and we could only purchase a much valued item from one company. But because of much more open industrial practices and technology, when one revolutionary product comes out ready to burn out credit card readers, you can expect like products to follow from different companies in two weeks or less. All because of that little plastic in your wallet, we are given more options and better products.
