Building a Outdoor Firepit for the Extreme
Sometimes, extreme sports go far beyond the usual ideas of snowboarding, bouldering, mountain biking, cliff diving, and white water rafting. In fact, although this isn't included on the technical list, sometimes extreme sport means strapping on your hiking boots and heading for the woods. The Boy Scouts have been doing it for a lifetime. Perhaps you have seen television shows about wild men and their desire to find fun by going to remote places.
If you are in the deep wood and you didn't pack in you won't have a stove to cook with. There will be no portable heater for warming yourself up. You are not going to have much of a light even if you did bring a flash light. Building a fire is one of the essential outdoor techniques to learn.
If you like the outdoors you will want to be able to enjoy a fire whenever you wish. If you did not grow up in Boys Scouts or any type of outdoor kind of family, you are probably at a complete loss for this idea. Let us share with you some step-by-step guidelines for building a fire in extreme conditions.
First, one needs to prepare the space for the fire appropriately. Plan out a circle, about four feet in diameter, for the fire. The outdoor firepit needs to be surrounded by stones after you have finished clearing it. If this can't be done, dig down several inches for additional safety.
Next, gathering tinder which will help the fire get started. Use whatever material you like including paper products or natural substances like leaves. Once that is completed, collect dry twigs or small wood pieces for kindling. Use fuel to keep the fire steady. You can use a variety of things to start a fire including wood that is sufficiently dry, animal waste or charcoal.
Now, you'll need to place some tinder on top of a group of kindling. If you leave your matches at home then you're doomed to the cumbersome fire starting technique involving sticks, a magnifying glass, steel wool and a battery, or flint and steel.
(Yes, this is extreme!) After the fire is well formed you can keep it buring in good condition by adding fuel and firewood. Consider air flow as you stack the wood to optimize how well the wood burns.
Practice makes perfect. Better to be prepared and know how to make a fire then end up cold.
