Create Jewelry Using Textile Techniques
I was quite intrigued when I found this book from the UK and more than curious to see what another country had to add to textile techniques in jewelry. Textile art jewelery enthusiasts will not be disappointed with Ms. Keay's addition to potential textile techniques for jewelry.
The first unusual nugget from Ms. Keay is in the introduction where she presents information about the crossover between jewelry and textile techniques. The book then proceeds with a part on the beginning of contemporary jewelry using textile techniques. Delicious. This part also includes blurbs on the foremost textile jewelers today including, among others, Mary Lee Hu, Arlene Fisch and Flora Book. Textile art jewelers will no doubt find this entire introductory section fascinating. You won't find this kind of historical perspective in many art jewelry books.
The next three pages present the Materials section which adequately presents what you'll need to make the diverse projects the book offers. There's the added bonus here in that the author provides warnings and tips for the reader before beginning any project.
The books' first two projects are on both regular felting and a Japanese felting technique, Nuno felting, where loose fibers are bonded to sheer fabrics. Fascinating and gorgeous. All is quite well illustrated and the instructional text steps are clearly laid out. Crocheting is the next section and provides instruction on making a crocheted silk necklace along with a inspired gallery section that is truly inspirational.
Binding is the next section and offers a unique and wonderful twist to the technique we in the States call wire wrapping. There's an inspiring gallery page here as well. In Knitting and French Knitting, you'll find a clear description of the techniques and also learn how to make a tiara and a French knit hollow bangle both of which are doable and appealing projects. One of the best things about the sections above is the gallery photos and descriptions that you'll find. Here you'll find unique finished pieces using various textile techniques.
Another bonus to this book is the section on how to manually weave jewelry on a loom. While the weave looks complex and quite interesting, the process is much easier than one would think. Advanced textile technique jewelers will find this section unusually valuable and often hard to find.
Lastly, this book concludes by presenting four more art jewelry textile techniques: hand spinning, smocking, bobbin lace making and sewing. Check out the jewelry made by Myung Urso to appreciate her sewn jewelry of embrodiery, oriental calligraphy and sterling.
You'll also get even more inspiration if you view the hand spinning project in this section. By recycling old newspaper, you can spin it into yarn for art jewelry making. Very unique. If you're interested in going green, this project is most definitely for you.
Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques by Sarah Keay concludes with an impressive gallery section designed to inspire and motivate even the most seasoned art jeweler. A well conceived how-to, this book can offer some originality to your library of textile art jewelry techniques. The finishing touch on this book is the list of websites to review.
how do i make wire wrapped ring with no hole in a piece of sea glass?
i would like to know how to make a wire wrapped ring with a piece of sea glass that i have found. i dont have a diamond tip drill and would not like to purchase one. so i was wondering if i could cradle the sea glass with the wire on the ring instead of putting the wire through the hole. If anyone knows of an instruction site or video tutorial that would be very helpful. thank you very much!
Study how a gem ring is constructed, it has prongs that are fastened to the ring, then the prongs are bent around the gem, locking it in place.
Or you could use a piece of metal came similar to that used for stained glass making, and wrap the perimeter of the glass, then solder that to the ring
